Notre Dame's Next Generation Voice Solution: Webex Calling

Note: Do not attempt to download Webex Calling until you receive an invitation.

Physical desk phones will be removed from workspaces and replaced with a software application called Webex Calling

  • Webex Calling allows you to make and receive calls on any University-owned device, including your PC or MAC computer, tablet, or smartphone.
  • Employees may download the Webex Calling app onto their personal Android or iOS mobile device if you choose, but this is not required.
  • This is not a replacement for Zoom, Google Chat or any other apps you use to communicate on campus (note: except for Jabber. Webex Calling DOES replace Jabber).
  • Remote employees without a physical desk phone will still receive the Webex calling application and a phone number.
  • You will no longer need to dial an 8 to get an outside line when using Webex Calling to place calls to off-campus numbers.

Putting it into perspective

After January 1, 2025, new physical phones will no longer be issued to end users on campus. For most of the campus community, physical desk phones are part of an outdates and obsolete technology, and aren't the best fit for day-to-day work. Out of the 7,900 phones on campus, approximately 60 make and or receive over 10 calls a day. Less than 150 make and or receive over 5 calls a day, meaning thousands of phones are not being utilized. 

However, there are still situations where a physical, wired phone is required. 

These include:

  • Positions with high call volume and multiple lines such as administrative and executive assistants
  • Disability requirements
  • Safety or Security requirements
  • Conference Rooms
  • Residence Hall Staff
  • Classrooms/Labs

Carbon Neutrality Commitment

This initiative supports Notre Dame working together to care for our common home, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across day-to-day operations. The elimination of thousands of phones and associated hardware reduces the need for raw materials used to create and maintain those items supports these efforts.

Better Use of Resources

Reducing reliance on physical infrastructure will decrease maintenance costs and allow us to allocate resources more effectively.

Support from The Office of Information Technology will be on-site to help with the installation of Webex Calling to all areas of campus as they transition.
